(Long Turn)
- 在陈述中用 “First / Next / Finally” 或 “On one hand / On the other hand” 等连接词来梳理思路
(That’s an interesting question... / Let me think for a moment...)。
或 “To sum up…”
(Discussion)
Part 2
Describe a book you read that you found useful.
You should say:
What it is
When and where you read it
Why you think it is useful
And explain how you feel about this book
One book that I found particularly useful is Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari.
- Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind 《
- Yuval Noah Harari /ˈjuːvɑːl ˈnəʊə həˈrɑːri/
I first read it during my undergraduate years, mostly in the university library, although I often continued reading it at home because it was so engaging. At that stage, I was trying to understand not only my major, but also how human societies function more broadly.
- engaging adj.
- how human societies function more broadly
I consider this book useful because it fundamentally reshaped the way I view history, technology, and human behaviour. Rather than presenting history as a list of dates and events, it explains why humans think, cooperate, and organise themselves the way they do. It also helped me develop critical thinking skills, as the author constantly challenges commonly accepted assumptions.
Personally, I feel intellectually stimulated every time I think about this book. It made me more curious about the world and more reflective about my own role in society. Even after finishing it, I often find myself revisiting its ideas, which is why I believe it has long-term value rather than being useful only in a short-term, practical sense.
- revisit ideas
- have long-term value
Part 3
- What kind of books do young people like to read nowadays?
- be drawn to …
- relatable adj.
- rewarding adj.
- accessible adj.
Nowadays, many young people are drawn to books that are either highly relatable or immediately rewarding. This includes self-improvement books, popular science fantasy novels, and books that have gone viral on social media. Compared with previous generations, young readers tend to prefer content that is accessible, emotionally engaging, and aligned with their personal interests rather than purely academic works.
- Some people believe that if children read more books, they may become more successful in the future. What’s your opinion?
- is indirect rather than guaranteed
I largely agree with this view, although I think the relationship is indirect rather than guaranteed. Reading regularly helps children build vocabulary, improve concentration, and develop analytical thinking, all of which are essential skills for long-term success.
That said, success also depends on how children engage with what they read. If reading is encouraged as an active process—where children reflect, question, and apply ideas—then it can significantly influence their future development. Simply reading large quantities of books without reflection may have a limited impact.
- What’s the value of museums?
- known to be real and what sb claims it is and not a copy
- made to be exactly the same as the original 逼真的
- in a tangible way
- broader historical, social, and cultural narratives
Museums play a crucial role in preserving collective memory and cultural identity. They provide access to authentic artefacts that allow people to connect with history in a tangible way, something textbooks or digital media cannot fully replicate.
authentic adj.
In addition, museums serve an educational function by contextualising objects within broader historical, social, and cultural narratives, helping visitors gain a deeper understanding of how societies evolve.
- Should museums be replaced by the Internet?
I don’t think museums should be replaced, but rather complemented by the Internet. While online platforms make information more accessible, they cannot recreate the physical presence and emotional impact of seeing real artefacts in person.
Museums offer an immersive experience that engages visitors on both an intellectual and emotional level. The Internet, on the other hand, works best as a tool for expanding access and providing additional interpretation, rather than acting as a complete substitute.
