Public places
- Have you ever talked with someone you don't know in public places?
Yeah, quite often actually. Usually at bus stops when the bus is late - classic British small talk about the weather or complaining about transport. Last week I had a lovely chat with an elderly lady in Tesco about which biscuits are best for dunking. Random conversations like that can brighten your day really.
Yes, I have. When I first went to the University of Westminster, we had an orientation week where everyone was new and didn’t really know each other. We were encouraged to socialise and make quick connections, so I ended up chatting with a few classmates in a public space on campus. It was a nice way to break the ice.
- Do you wear headphones in public places?
Always on the tube - it's my way of avoiding eye contact and awkward conversations! But I don't wear them in shops or cafés, feels a bit rude. I do keep one ear free when walking though, for safety. My noise-cancelling ones are brilliant for blocking out that awful drill sound on the Underground.
Not really. I’d love to wear them to listen to podcasts or music because it looks kind of cool, but I usually don’t for safety reasons. I’m always worried that I might not hear car horns or something important on the road, which could be dangerous.
- Would you like to see more public places near where you live?
Definitely. We've only got one small park nearby and it's always packed. Would love a proper community centre or a decent library - ours closed down last year due to budget cuts. Even just more benches would be nice. Nowhere to sit and have a coffee outside except the busy high street.
Yes, absolutely. I think my neighbourhood could really use more leisure facilities and supermarkets, maybe even a sports centre or a library. If there were more places for people to relax and socialise, the community would feel much more lively and convenient.
(= need / would benefit from having)
could (really) use + 名词
We could use some more chairs. (= We need more chairs.) |
I could really use a coffee right now. (= I really want a coffee.) |
My neighbourhood could use more parks. (= My area needs more parks.) |
