(Long Turn)
  • 在陈述中用 “First / Next / Finally” 或 “On one hand / On the other hand” 等连接词来梳理思路
(That’s an interesting question... / Let me think for a moment...)。
  • 若时间快到,可用一句 “In conclusion…”“To sum up…”
(Discussion)

Part 2

Describe something important that your family has kept for a long time.
You should say:
What it is
What it is used for
How your family got it
And explain why it is important to your family

One item that has been kept in my family for generations is an old wooden writing desk.
It isn’t particularly valuable in a monetary sense, but it has always been used as a place for studying, writing letters, and later on, working or preparing for exams. Even today, it still functions as a desk rather than a decorative object.
My great-grandfather bought it shortly after he got married. At that time, it symbolised stability and education, which were considered essential for building a family’s future. Since then, the desk has been passed down from one generation to the next, and each owner has added small marks of use—scratches, ink stains, or faded corners.
What makes it important to my family is not the object itself, but what it represents. It embodies our belief in education, perseverance, and continuity. Whenever I sit at that desk, I feel a strong connection to my family history, as if I’m continuing a silent conversation with those who came before me.

Part 3

  1. What kinds of items would a family keep for a long time?
Families tend to keep items that carry emotional or symbolic value rather than practical value alone. These often include heirlooms such as jewellery, photographs, handwritten letters, or objects associated with important life events. Such items act as physical reminders of shared memories and family identity.
      1. heirloom noun /ˈerluːm/
          • a family heirloom 传家宝
  1. Are there any differences between the things that are important to a family now and in the past?
Yes, there are noticeable differences. In the past, families were more likely to value durable physical objects partly because material possessions were scarce and long-lasting items were significant investments.
Nowadays, importance is often attached to digital records or experiences, such as photos stored online or memories of travelling together. While the form has changed, the underlying need to preserve emotional connections remains the same.
  1. What kinds of things are kept in the museums?
Museums usually preserve objects that hold historical, cultural, or artistic significance. These can range from ancient tools and manuscripts to modern artworks and everyday objects from previous eras.
By displaying such items, museums help the public understand how societies have evolved and how ordinary objects can reflect broader social values and historical contexts.
