(Long Turn)
- 在陈述中用 “First / Next / Finally” 或 “On one hand / On the other hand” 等连接词来梳理思路
(That’s an interesting question... / Let me think for a moment...)。
或 “To sum up…”
(Discussion)
Part 2
Describe a person who inspired you to do something interesting.
You should say:
Who he/she is
How you knew him/her
What interesting thing you did
And explain how he/she inspired you to do something interesting
Well, the person who inspired me to do something genuinely interesting is my university lecturer, Professor Xie, whom I first met during my undergraduate interpreting course.
She didn’t just teach theory — she showed us real clips of UN conferences and demonstrated how interpreters work under pressure. One day after class, she suggested that if we wanted to “feel the adrenaline /əˈdrenəlɪn/ of real interpreting”, we should try consecutive interpreting a UN speech for 10 minutes.
Expressions
- do something genuinely interesting
- real clips of UN conferences
adrenal gland noun /əˈdriːnl ɡlænd/ either of the two small organs above the kidneys that produce adrenaline and other hormones 肾上腺
And that became the interesting thing I did because of her.
Up until that point, consecutive interpreting sounded terrifying to me. But because she spoke about it with so much passion, I decided to give it a try. I picked a speech by António Guterres, listened carefully while taking notes, and then tried to reproduce the message after each segment. At first, I missed key points and struggled to organise my output, but I remember laughing at myself because it felt like being on a linguistic rollercoaster — mentally exhausting, yet strangely exhilarating.
Expressions
- António Guterres /ænˈtɒn.i.uː ɡʊˈtɛr.ɛʃ/
verb [transitive] reproduce something to produce sth very similar to sth else in a different medium or context; to make sth happen again in the same way
- exhilarating adjective /ɪɡˈzɪləreɪtɪŋ/ very exciting and great fun
- My first parachute jump was an exhilarating experience.
- Young people often find danger rather exhilarating.
What made it interesting was that it didn’t feel like homework anymore; it felt like a challenge I genuinely wanted to conquer. It motivated me to practise consecutive interpreting with different speakers, deal with varied accents and speech structures, and eventually develop a deeper interest in how information is processed and sometimes omitted under time pressure.
She inspired me not by pushing, but by turning a demanding skill into something exciting. Her encouragement helped me realise that interpreting isn’t just an academic subject — it can be an adventure if you approach it with curiosity.
Part3
- What qualities make someone a role model?
- look up to somebody
- excel in …
- unethical adj.
- inspirational adj.
I think a role model needs a balance of competence, integrity, and authenticity /ˌɔːθenˈtɪsəti/. Competence matters because people naturally look up to someone who excels in their field. But integrity is equally crucial—if someone is brilliant but unethical, they don’t inspire genuine admiration. And authenticity ties everything together, because people are more influenced by someone who’s relatable and honest about their experiences. So it’s really the combination of these traits that makes a person truly inspirational.

- Who can influence children more, parents or teachers?
- play a transformative role
In most cases, I’d say parents exert a stronger influence, simply because they provide the emotional foundation and day-to-day environment children grow up in. Their behaviour, values, and even communication style shape kids long before they enter school.
But teachers can also play a transformative role, especially when children don’t receive much guidance at home. A supportive teacher can open a child’s mind to new interests or possibilities they haven’t encountered before.
So rather than one being definitively “more influential,” I think parents and teachers influence children in different but complementary ways.
- Why should children learn from role models?
Because role models give children a tangible example of what’s possible. When kids see someone embodying qualities like perseverance or curiosity, it becomes easier for them to picture those qualities in themselves. Also, role models provide a kind of moral and behavioural compass—children learn what is socially acceptable by observing people they admire.
And on a practical level, role models can spark motivation. A child might decide to read more, practise a sport, or explore a new skill simply because they see someone they look up to doing it. So role models serve as both emotional guidance and behavioural templates.
